In painting, a pentimento (Italian for βrepentanceβ; from the verb pentirsi, meaning βto repentβ; plural pentimenti) is βthe presence or emergence of earlier images, forms, or strokes that have been changed and painted overβ.
Since 1963, a great deal has moved. Fields have become suburbs, a harbour has become a marina, an airport has gone quiet, and many places now answer to more than one name. Almost as much has not moved at all: the bend of a riverbed, the terraces cut into a hillside, the shape of an orchard still legible under the streets that replaced it.
This map is one of those, for a whole island.
